Be Inspired

Today I had a meeting with an organisation called Inspire. I have known about their work since my time as a youth policy adviser in NSW.  This organisation is behind Reachout, ActNow and Beanbag centres.  Inspire uses technology as a way of improving the lives of young people. Fundamental to their work is to involve young people in everything that they do.

Reachout: Reach Out!

Realistic Info for Young People About Drugs & Alcohol

Youth Drug Support logoAs part of Drug Action Week I today attended the launch of a fantastic new resource for young people. Developed by Family Drug Support and funded by NSW Health, the Youth Drug Support website provides a safe, interactive space for young people (and their parents) to discuss issues and seek information about drugs, alcohol, sex, sexuality and other issues. I look forward to seeing how the website develops.

Today is World AIDS Day

As part of World AIDS day there are a number of events happening around NSW. Check out the ACON site for all the details.

This afternoon I will be launching a new sexual health resource for youth workers. developed by the Youth Accommodation Association, this kit assists youth workers to begin dialogue with young people (in particular those who are homeless) about sexual health.

What needs to be done to give babies and children the best chance in life?

In 1998 the Labor government established the Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP). The Commission plays a vital role in advising government on the welfare, wellbeing and safety of young people and children in NSW.

CCYP’s latest report, What about the kids? provides an excellent overview of what needs to be done to improve the experiences of babies and young children in Australia. The report provides evidence based recommendations that would make a difference immediately. These include:

  • quality childcare with strong regulation
  • workplace action to provide for family responsibilities
