"The school formal is meant to be a formal dance between a young man and a young woman, not a young man and a young man,"

"We love all our [gay] students as we do all people in our churches but their lifestyle is not encouraged, particularly if it was a promiscuous lifestyle. We are dealing with young people here.

- Dr Laurie Scandrett, Chief Exeuctive of the Sydney Anglican School Corporation says no to marriage and to dancing for same sex couples

GLTB people and aged care services

About a quarter of Australia's population is expected to be over 65 by 2050. The ageing of our population has been a big issue for governments around the country, but the needs and expectations of older GLTB people is an area that requires more research.

The Federal Government is making welcome moves to end discrimination against same-sex couples (that will ensure equal treatment in pension and superannuation schemes among other things), but there are a range of other issues that will affect individual GLTB people as they age; including health problems, access to services and accommodation. Since 1999, there have been moves around Australia to build privately run GLTB friendly aged care facilities. None have been built yet (although one is commencing soon in Victoria), but attempts to build such facilities (wanted or not) raises questions about whether current options for older GLTB people are satisfactory.

The project is examining the extent to which social change in relation to people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (or otherwise non-heterosexual) has been reflected in the practices of aged care service providers, particularly accommodation, and what are the implications of these changes?

The questionnaire is anonymous but if you would like to participate in follow up research you will be asked to provide a contact email address at the end of the questionnaire.
