SEE RED

"In my dream I saw fire everywhere with flames burning very high and uncontrollably.

... I woke up from my dream with the interpretation as the following words came to me in a flash from the Spirit of God: that His conditional protection has been removed from the nation of Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of innocent children in the womb."

— Pastor Danny Nalliah, of "Catch the Fire Ministries", blaming the Victorian bushfires disaster on laws decriminalising abortion in that state.

Maternity services review

This week, the Federal Government launched the discussion paper ‘Improving Maternity Services in Australia', the first step in a review into maternity services in Australia.

Despite international research showing that access to contiuous midwife care can lead to savings in health dollars as well as better outcomes for women and babies, as midwives cannot currently access Medicare rebates, many women are not able to chose continuous midwife care throughout their pregnancy.

According to the Federal Government:

The Review is the first step in developing a comprehensive plan for maternity services into the future.

The Review will:

  • canvass a wide range of issues relevant to maternity services, including antenatal services, birthing options, postnatal services up to six weeks after birth, and peer and social support for women in the perinatal period;
  • ensure that all interested parties have an opportunity to participate; and
  • inform the development of a National Maternity Services Plan.

The paper also considers bringing midwives under Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for easier access for all women.

Submissions in response to the discussion paper are being sought until 31 October 2008.
